As we celebrate Pride Month, a time dedicated to honoring the diversity and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community, we at Impact Hero are extremely happy to announce our newest collaboration with Seeds & Stories in Uganda. This partnership underscores our commitment to advocating for women's rights and empowering marginalized groups around the world - and we are incredibly thankful that we could build Impact Hero as a platform to support projects which truly make an impact. Our latest project, "Empowering Women through Education," aims to provide vital literacy and gender-based violence (GBV) education to women in Uganda from August 2024 to July 2025.
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a significant issue worldwide, particularly in Africa, where the prevalence is alarmingly high. GBV encompasses physical, sexual, and psychological harm inflicted on individuals based on their gender. It includes domestic violence, sexual assault, and harmful traditional practices. In Uganda, the situation is dire: 56% of women aged 15-49 reported having experienced physical violence while 22% had experienced sexual violence at least once since the age of 15 years.
The impact of GBV extends beyond immediate physical harm. It undermines the health, dignity, security, and autonomy of survivors. Moreover, it hampers social and economic development, reinforcing the cycle of poverty and inequality . Addressing GBV is crucial for creating safe and equitable societies where women can thrive.
Education is a powerful tool for female empowerment and plays a critical role in combating GBV. Educated women are more likely to understand their rights, seek help, and break free from abusive situations. Education also equips women with the skills needed to participate in the workforce, enhancing their economic independence and reducing their vulnerability to violence.
Research shows that women with higher levels of education are less likely to experience GBV. For instance, educated women are more likely to reject harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM), which are forms of GBV. Furthermore, education fosters critical thinking and self-confidence, empowering women to challenge gender norms and advocate for their rights.
Through this initiative, we aim to create a positive impact on the lives of the participants, fostering a more sustainable and equitable community. By empowering women with education and addressing GBV, we believe that we can contribute to breaking the cycle of violence and poverty, ultimately leading to a brighter future for these women and their families.
